Things to Do in Austin to Take Your Mind Off Your Divorce

June 28, 2022

Often ranked as one of the best cities in America, Austin is full of opportunity and new beginnings. Austin is one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the country with an average population increase of over 40,000 people per year. Given the quality-of-life Central Texas has to offer, it’s no wonder that so many people choose to move to the capital of Texas.

One of the biggest draws to Austin is that it is a great place to marry and raise a family, which is reflected in Austin’s marriage rate. Austinites tie the knot more than any of the 20 biggest cities in the United States. In fact, 40% of the city’s population consists of married people. Inevitably, however, where there is marriage, there is also divorce.

Divorce isn’t easy, even if you know it’s the right decision for you and your family. Fortunately, you can take steps to mitigate the stress that comes along with the divorce process. Prioritizing your mental health and wellbeing is a great place to start. Here are a few things you can do around town to decompress:

Go on a hike

Austin is known as a city that prioritizes time spent outdoors, which is unsurprising considering Austinites have access to beautiful paths and trails on their doorsteps. Studies show that being in nature helps you relax, reduces stress, lowers cortisol levels, releases muscle tension, and slows heart rates. So whether you walk around Town Lake or go out to the Barton Creek Greenbelt, there is a trail for everyone to clear their heads and breathe some fresh air.

Get in the water

From Barton Springs to Deep Eddy, Austin is filled with great places to enjoy the sunshine while cooling off. Swimming is a great low-impact exercise that has been shown to lower psychological and physical stress, making it the perfect activity to ease any tensions surrounding your divorce. If you are looking to get out of the city to take a dip, you can visit Dripping Springs or Wimberley in under an hour and enjoy natural, spring-fed swimming holes.

Spend time with friends and family

Quality time with your family and friends will make all the difference in the world during your divorce. Austin is full of great restaurants and public spaces to be with those you love. Spend a leisurely Sunday at the Mueller Farmer’s Market or take your kids fishing at Lake Austin. Making new memories with those you love acts as a great reminder that there are memories to be made and moments to enjoy.

Cultivate a new hobby

One of the easiest ways to find community in Austin is through common interests. Whether that is taking up cycling and riding through Hill Country or taking a ceramics class in East Austin, you can find a hobby that introduces you to new experiences and new people. Cultivating a new hobby and making new friends can enrich your life and help you shift onto the positive.

Austin is a rapidly changing city full of possibilities. Just as the city evolves and grows, you too can focus on making a fresh start in your personal life. It’s important to lean on your support systems and prioritize your mental and emotional wellbeing during the divorce process. Luckily, Austin is a vibrant city full of opportunities to unwind and focus on the bright future ahead.
