Collaborative Divorce is an alternative process. It takes the decisions that a judge would typically make and puts those back into the hands of the parties and allows them to shape an outcome that works best for them and for their family. The greatest benefits to Collaborative Divorce are the ability to keep the process private and the added benefit that a neutral financial professional and a neutral mental health professional are involved from the beginning to help guide the couple to fair and sensible outcomes.
Interestingly, I’ve had several cases lately with adult children involved, and the Collaborative Divorce process allowed those children to express their wishes and concerns and have that be considered as part of the process. When clients are trying to consider what process would be best for their divorce, I encourage them to start with the end in mind. If they want an outcome that is fair and over which they have a substantial amount of control, I always encourage my clients to consider the Collaborative Divorce process. My goal in working with clients is to make sure that they feel heard, to make sure that they have realistic expectations, and to guide them to the best outcome possible.
