Co-Parenting Advice: Top Tips for Effective Co-Parenting

Kelly Caperton Fischer | January 5, 2024

The best advice on co-parenting boils down to putting your children’s needs first. The most important thing you can do as a co-parent is to always prioritize your children’s best interests.

Here are a few other pieces of co-parenting advice to help you parent effectively after a divorce:

  • Set aside any negative feelings you might have about your ex-spouse when the children are present or when you’re making decisions that will affect the children. Even if you feel angry or bitter toward your ex, your children should be able to have a healthy relationship with both of their parents.
  • Keep the lines of communication open between you and your ex-spouse. You don’t have to have a close relationship after the divorce, but you do need to answer their calls and respond promptly when they get in touch with you by email or text message.
  • Be flexible when you can. It’s good to stick to a routine, both for you and for your children, but sometimes, life gets in the way, and you need to be able to make adjustments to parenting schedules to do what’s best for your children, even if it isn’t what you had planned.
