Advice for Clients Concerned About How Long Their Divorce Will Take

Megan Decadi | February 4, 2022

What should I do if I’m concerned about how long my divorce might take?

First, focus on what you can control rather than what you can’t control. The way that the other party is behaving, the court’s calendar, these are things that are beyond your control. But what you can control is how you react to certain situations, taking the high ground, and finding an attorney that matches your personality in your goals and is going to help you stay focused on where you’re trying to go.

Second, know your goals. What is most important to you? What do you want your life to look like after divorce? By knowing your goals, you will be able to select a lawyer whose style of practice aligns closely with what you’re hoping to achieve. There are lots of times that you may have the option to do something in your divorce, but maybe it’s not the most advisable path for you. Given what your goals are, divorce can be a very emotional process. You may be tempted at times, to take actions or make decisions that maybe don’t align with your original goals. You need to select an attorney who’s going to remind you of your goals as you go through the process to help you keep moving down the path that you’re wanting to travel throughout the divorce process. Ask yourself: is this action is this strategic decision going to move me closer to my goals or farther away? The right attorney will be reminding you of these things all along the way so that you can ensure that you’re able to exercise your best judgment throughout your divorce.
